Despite originating in the military in the 1890s, over the years chinos have become a symbol of effortlessly cool American style.

Today their smart tailoring and go-with-anything design makes them your go-to trouser of choice whether you’re dressing up or keeping it casual. And, with such a vast collection of colours available at Brooks Brothers, your hardest decision is going to be choosing a shade for the summer.

Chinos were first worn as part of the uniform for American armed forces stationed in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Sourced from Chinese twill cotton, the trousers were nicknamed chinos after the Spanish word for ‘China’ and these plain-fronted designs returned home with soldiers after the war.

Later, chinos became a common sight on college campuses, where they defined the East Coast, Ivy League aesthetic. Hollywood soon followed, leading a generation to define chinos as an icon of laid-back cool. After a brief interlude, when they were surpassed by boxy fits and sportswear, chinos are back, with slimmer cuts and cheery, fresh colours. What was once standard issue for the military is now a wardrobe staple, whether it’s a board meeting or wedding party.
