This vegan, gluten-free mix gets its name from the French word for raw, ‘cru,’ combined with the name for its baked counterpart, ‘granola.’ Wondering exactly what this hearty mix is made of? Check out the ingredients below.
Raw Buckwheat Groats. Don’t be deceived by the name—buckwheat groats have nothing to do with wheat, and technically aren’t even a grain! Rather, buckwheat is a seed, making it perfect for those sensitive to gluten. Its high rutin content counterbalances high blood pressure, and a moderate glycemic index combats diabetes. And, because whole groats are harvested as is, they retain their full nutritional value—costing you a lot less calories than other forms of oats.
Almonds. Forget the myth that all fats should be avoided. Like many nuts, almonds are a healthy fat that promotes heart health and lowers bad cholesterol. Healthy fats also help keep you fuller longer—making them great if your New Years resolution is to get in shape!
Flax, Sunflower and Austrian Pumpkin Seeds. Raw seeds pack a ton of nutritional value—from various vitamins and minerals to fibre and protein. And, they too help keep you feeling satiated—meaning the sprinkling of seeds in this mix goes a long way in powering you through your day!
Thompson Raisins. Juicier and sweeter than regular raisins, these small, golden sultanas still pack all the same health benefits—vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and energy included.
Gogi Berries. Some refer to these tangy red berries as the fruit incarnation of the fountain of youth. We can’t promise that, but we can say that gojis contain more iron than spinach, more beta carotene than carrots and more protein than whole wheat. Chinese medicine has a history of using goji berries to aid eyesight. And—besides packing antioxidants, vitamins and minerals—these berries promote the body’s production of Human Growth Hormone, which prevents aging. Sign us up!
Crunola Bar Recipe
Ingredients:(1 batch – about 12 bars)
2 cups rolled oats
¾ cup honey
1 ¼ cup almond butter
1 cup ground flaxseed (great source of fiber!)
1 ½ cups Crunola raw granola
To taste, any add-ins you desire
To stay energized, we look for grab-and-go snacks we can take with us each morning. While we keep our pantries stashed with staple power foods - like Organic Crunola raw granola - that are delicious on their own, we’re always looking for ways to switch up our snacks.
It turns out it’s easy to use these ingredients to make your very own energy bars! This no-baking-required recipe is based on our deliciously crunchy Crunola raw granola, but you can easily substitute for our Organic Granola.
1.Beginning with the honey, almond butter and oats, stir together in a large bowl until evenly mixed. For a little extra flavour, we suggest substituting some of the almond butter for one of our organic chocolate spreads – like the hazelnutty Noisella!
2.Gradually, add in the ground flaxseed until it is evenly distributed into the mixture.
3.Repeat the previous step, this time with Crunola (or alternatively, Granola). If you’ve decided to include any add-ins—like chocolate chips, shredded coconut, extra nuts or dried fruit—be sure to evenly mix those in as well.
4.At this point, the mixture should be sticking together well. If it’s falling apart, add a little more honey. If it seems too sticky, add some more oats or Crunola and combine well.
5.Spoon your concoction into a 9×11-inch baking dish. Refrigerate for at least an hour or until the mixture hardens into a solid bar.
6.Voilà! Here you have your very own, customised granola bars. Cut and serve, or wrap individually and keep refrigerated for ready-to-go snacks.
