Five ways to customise your denim...

Kildare Village

Denim. The off-duty hero that never lets us down. From boyfriend jeans to waist-skimming jackets, there’s no denying those beautiful blues are the cornerstone of every wardrobe. We may love it for its simplicity, but denim also makes the perfect base to experiment with. So, since customisation is everywhere this season, we’ve rounded up five on-trend ways to personalise your pieces. Roll up your sleeves and let creativity reign…

1.

Patch it up

Got a few pairs of jeans you’re not wearing but not quite ready to part with either? Turn them into patches! Choose a style in contrasting shades and cut them into large rectangular patches, then stitch onto the knees or thighs of your favourite pair. A nod to the 70s, the patchwork trend transcends the season, making it an ideal place to start if you prefer to play it safe in the style stakes.

2.

In stitches

Ditch your idea of denim as you know it; this season is all about statement embroidery. Key for SS17, embroidery continues to reign supreme as a denim detail to know. For a subtle take on the trend, stick to classic floral embroidery on jeans and jackets. To make your look truly individual, turn up the hems of your jeans and hand stitch your initials onto them in a contrasting colour – it will instantly give your outfit serious kudos.

DIY hems

Whether you opt for oversized turn-up hems à la Camille Charrière or to create a step hem silhouette, you’ll score style points for DIYing those edges. Channel the sold-out Vetements style by using super-sharp scissors to cut an irregular hem at the ankle (short at the front, longer at the back), then gradually pick away at the edges with a sharp pin to create a frayed finish for that worn-in feel.

Big on badges

Make like Chiara Ferragni and go for bold with badges. Mix and match colourful patches in a range of styles to create an eclectic look that’s totally unique. Our top tip? Stick to one area – for jeans the tops of the thighs or the back pockets – to give it some focus. The trend works just as well on jackets and bags and badges are super easy to apply – just iron on and go!

Distressed detailing

Distressed denim shows no signs of slowing down, working best on skinny and boyfriend styles for a 90s vibe. And it’s surprisingly easy to do. While wearing your jeans or denim jacket, mark out where you want the rips to be with a safety pin. Then, with sharp scissors, cut the rips, and pull at the threads with finger and thumb to create a lived-in look.
