Partners In Health (PIH) is a US non-profit healthcare organisation formed in 1987, which brings high-quality healthcare to more than three million of the world’s most vulnerable people.
The story of PIH began some four years earlier, in 1983. While on a volunteering trip to Haiti, two of PIH’s founders, Dr Paul Farmer and Ophelia Dahl, established a community-based health project in Cange, known as Zanmi Lasante (‘Partners In Health’ in Haitian Creole). Two years later this became the Clinique Bon Sauveur, a two-room clinic that has since grown into a fully fledged hospital with extensive facilities and capabilities.
The Clinique Bon Sauveur was the first in series of hugely successful projects that address the healthcare needs of Haiti’s poorest. Since then, through tireless fundraising and overwhelming support from all over the world, PIH’s reach has extended to eight other impoverished sites in Haiti as well as 11 additional countries globally.
Where possible, PIH works with members of the communities they serve to expand local skills and knowledge as well as to ensure sustainability. The film ‘Abundance Found: Haiti’s Heroes’ highlights the essential work carried out by PIH and their Haitian staff in revitalising destitute communities.
Value Retail has been a supporter of PIH since 2008, organising fundraising initiatives to raise awareness of the PIH mission.
